The Importance of Spirit Seals
The Importance of Spirit Seals
When it comes to spiritual matters, few concepts are more confusing for new believers than spirit seals.spirit seals The Bible speaks of the sealing of the Holy Spirit for Christians in several ways, and Paul talks about it most often. It is a ministry of God that happens the moment one believes in Jesus and that guarantees that those who believe are secure—that they belong to God and He will never abandon them (Ephesians 1:13). But what exactly does this mean? What does it have to do with baptism, and why is it so important to our faith?
The word “seal” is found three times in the New Testament: (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13; 4:30).spirit seals Paul uses this image to communicate that the Holy Spirit marks believers as His own property, that He will keep them until the day of redemption, and that they are guaranteed that they are saved. This seal is indestructible, irrevocable, and unbreakable.
In ancient times, seals were used for a wide variety of purposes: to authenticate copies of laws or agreements; to prove the quality or quantity of an object’s contents; to witness transactions; and to verify ownership or protect a document against forgery.spirit seals An impression from a seal, called a sphragis, was placed on an object and would only be opened by the authorized person who had a key, or the owner could use his staff to break the seal and gain access to its contents.
Because of the broad range of ancient usages, it is likely that this is the sense intended when the Bible speaks of a Christian’s sealing with the Holy Spirit: to identify the believer as God’s property, to guarantee that He will not forsake him, and to give him a sure hope of salvation. This is not a separate work of salvation—as some mistakenly suggest—but is an indelible mark inscribed upon the believer’s heart from the time he trusts in Christ.
As a result of this promise and guarantee, it is essential for every believer to understand what it means to be sealed with the Holy Spirit. It should motivate us to seek the lofty spiritual preparation that will be necessary for our success in the Day of the Lord, so that we will not grieve the Holy Spirit by living in the flesh (1 Thessalonians 5:23) or neglecting to study God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15). It should also inspire us to cooperate with the Holy Spirit’s transforming work in our lives, so that we may become more and more like Christ (2 Peter 3:18). To this end, we should read and discuss the following three articles in this issue of The Living Theology.
